Here, there and everywhere…

It’s past 12:00 midnight…as i sit idle with one of my best pals which incidentally happens to be my laptop…i have this undying itch to blog today…its just one of those days where the feeling won’t go away…and blogging is going to give me a sense of satisfaction, a sense of fulfillment…then the television’s on with an ed, edd n eddy show running…zoop (similar to the vanishing sound that is generated when Obelix launches a Roman soldier)…i’m in cartoon land…wondering about those wonderful things i used to watch glorify, admire and idolize when i was a kid…the first one i still remember was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe…and it goes without saying i was a die hard fan of the series and still am…the new one’s good…but as the saying goes older the wine, better it tastes…so too with cartoons…so much so i believed a place called Eternia existed far away…where He-Man was battling with the evil Skeletor thwarting off any plans to harm people…sometimes i feel that these cartoons too fill children with morals…with a just distinction between good and bad…between right and wrong…

Sunday’s were a blessing in disguise during those days…used to get up early in the morning…needless to say why…and was done with my bath, breakfast etc etc…@ 9:30 or 10:00 i used to glue myself to the cartoon and would be lost in world of my own…waiting to hear the one line i used to hail everyday…”BY THE POWER OF GRAY SKULL, I HAVE THE POWER!!!”…felt real bad when the series stopped…was as if a part of me was ripped and taken away…time was the only healer…it was this which introduced me to the wonderful world of animation and imagination where a wonderful world could be created…a place full of happiness, full of peace and full of all the wonderful things every human being can dream of…

a few years later the whole school was abuzz with only one word…”MOWGLI!!!!!” – yeah the “Jungle Book” thing…Rudyard Kipling was idolized and the guy in the tiny lil underwear was soon a hero…the madness hit everyone and me and my brother screwed up some real good tapes of Tracy Chapman (i realized that only a decade later) to record the title track and it goes without saying we were running like mowgli’s an hour later…”Jungle jungle baat chali hai pata chala hai…arre chaaddi pehen ke phool khila hai phool khila hai….” this one movie taught some other great things…of the boding between various beings…caring not only for your family but for everything that has life…really wonderful for Ruddy to create such a charecter…and yeah we still do hold that tape proudly ..

there were a few cartoons after this…but none really gained my attention…so i switched to comics instead…and Asterix got hold of me big time…i still am a major fan…scourged every comic from the library and read it…and Obelix was my favourite…

another cartoon which got me in the head like crazy…”The Adventures of Johnny Quest”…saw the first episode when we got our cable connection…all the excitement got better with this toon…i still remember the time…it used to air from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM…i just loved the whole concept about a Virtual reality world in the series called as Quest World developed Benton Quest…Johnny Quest’s father and an amazing scientist…and the various stages of evolution on the virtual reality world…where human limits are stretched to the maximum where you can tear apart the body in which you live and do extra ordinary feats…but one you’re dead in VR you’re a veggie in real world…after watching Matrix for about a dozen times now i feel did the storyline originate along the lines of virtual reality from some such series…too many similarities…and they had wonderful bull dog going by the name Bandit…the characters had names that would instantly get glued you and make you same “Wow!!!”…Johnny Quest…Benton Quest…Race (yeah that was a guy!!!)…an Indian, Hadji Singh…Bandit – guess why the name so – because the bull dog had black mask like spots around its eyes making it looke like one…Jeremaya Surd (he’s as bad as his name sounds…just like the square root of 3)…another thing that got me hooked to this seires was the music…the opening and the closing theme stuck in my head…used to hum it continuously…had no idea till recently i came to know about it…it was a Percussion Heavy Jazz Piece…im shocked…the sounds had such powerful intonations of brass that made it stand out from other tunes…i still have it exactly in my head and am humming it right now…

there used to be this one hour or so slot called as Power Zone on Cartoon Network…has loads of goodies in it…action toons…Swat Kats – two cats who go by the cover of junk yard workers and have built an awesome plane to fight the evils threating Megakat City…Centurions – three men who care to save the environment againt plunderers…always trying to steal the technology that has made these men the superheroes they are…once they call in to their base station and give their position and utter the words “Man and Machine, Power Extreme!!!” they are beamed with all sorts of equipments and weaponry which helps them fight the bad guys…i seem to have forgotten the others that used to come in this segment…but they were a good lot…

then there was the usual tom and jerry stuff…they used to create a laugh riot whenever people saw them…they still manage to even now…popeye the sailor man!!! twoot twoot twoot twoot…was also one of my favourites…i ate a lot of vegetables even before i saw it…only my beliefs were strengthened by Popeye…he was a leech…that was the part i discovered a little later…left me stunned…

Captain Planet was about a superhero who is created out of the combination of the five basic elements our whole planet works on…Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart…to rubbish attempts of money minded, corporate honchos who will go to any depths to make money and give the environment a damn…five special children have been handpicked by Gaia, mother of planet earth and they have been given a special ring containing the power of each element to summon upon Captain Planet during the need of the hour…this way…”Let our powers combine; Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Heart…”…

there were two toons which caught my attention during my engineering days…one was called Digimon! and the other Dragonball Z!

Digimon is about a couple of friends who discover some cool digital gadgets that transform into digital monsters…these are monsters that live in a digital earth parallel to our world which has been generated as a result of our extensive, ever pervading communication network…they evolve into monsters that are really powerful to fight against evil…it had some really cool concepts…these digital monsters were nothing but evolving bits of data…once a digimon was hit or badly injured it does not die as they are made of bits of reconfigurable data…but it disintegrates into bits of data which recompose as a Digi-egg and then hatch when rubbed gently…cool….

and Dragonball Z happens to be a favourite toon around…there are several sagas in the series…another post for that entirely….

other toons that i adore: the simpsons, the jetsons, the flintstones, richie rich, scooby dooby doo, captain planet, the centurions, swat cats, my thor, tin tin to name a few….

P.S i have a pair of pyjamas that have tile images of Holmer Simpson holding Duff beer…
